Break through for coeliac disease

Perth researchers are trialling a breakthrough vaccine that allows people to eat gluten without becoming ill, and it could be on the market in just two years.

Doctors believe it could even be used to help sufferers of diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis.

Dr Michael Winlo, from Linear Clinical Research, said the vaccine is given through a light injection, similar to how a diabetic might inject insulin.

“It comes with the promise of being able to live a normal life after having to be so strict with one’s diet, which is exciting and liberating for people with coeliac,” said Dr Winlo.

The new vaccine is a special combination of proteins that work by attaching to the immune system cells that overreact.
