Officially Putting Kindness Back into Business

A restaurant chain in the United States is proving that kindness is just as important to the business as its food, creating the role of Chief Kindness Officer (CKO).

Sonny’s BBQ has been a staple in the United States South for generations, known for its mouthwatering slow-cooked meats, signature pulled pork, and sweet tea.

But at the heart of the business is a dedication to kindness, which can be traced back to its foundation in 1968 when “Sonny” Tillman and his wife Lucille opened their first local BBQ joint to bring people together.

Today, that mission is just as strong. Current CEO Jamie Yarmuth says the CKO role will focus on how the business can give back to the community through the brand’s Kindness Crew.

“We have built a program rooted in the belief that small acts of kindness can create a big impact, and today’s announcement reflects our continued commitment to uplifting our communities,” Mr Yarmuth said.

So, who is Sonny’s inaugural Chief Kindness Officer? Colleagues describe Elden Scott as the perfect man for the job, saying he embodies the spirit of Sonny’s.

“He is constantly finding ways to make people smile. His energy is contagious, and his commitment to kindness is unmatched,” according to BBQ server, Anna Dandelakis.

Scott has a background in sales and marketing, but it was his unwavering dedication to helping his colleagues and customers that made him the standout candidate.

Outside the workplace, Scott has been actively involved with organisations like Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida, Autism Pensacola, and Habitat for Humanity.

Now, as Sonny’s first-ever Chief Kindness Officer, he’ll be leading the Kindness Crew, expanding the Random Acts of BBQ initiative, and strengthening community outreach.

“Kindness isn’t just a value at Sonny’s BBQ – it’s the foundation of everything we do,” said Scott.

“It is an honour to be recognized as a leader of kindness and community in our company. I’m eager to connect with more team members and guests in ways that make each day better and savour each moment of creating a larger impact in the name of BBQ.”

While Sonny’s BBQ may not yet be a household name beyond the southern United States, its dedication to kindness serves as an inspiring model for businesses worldwide.

Wouldn’t it be great if more businesses sought to make a difference in people’s lives, one act of kindness at a time?
