The Guide Dog that transformed a woman’s life – Good News Roundup 2nd August, 2024

Hello and welcome to the Good News Roundup for Friday, 2nd August, 2024!

We’re starting at a frankly not-unusual place for The Good News Movement – dogs.

From the BBC comes the story of Louann Kent, a blind woman from Derby who is doing a charity skydive to raise money for the Guide Dogs foundation.

Why? Because, as Louann tells it, when she was partnered with Guide Dog Ugo in 2017, it completely transformed her life.

Though there’s (justifiably) a lot of doom and gloom about the environment, there’s lots of people out there still working to try and make a considerable difference.

Another story from the UK here, as the number of plastic bags that wash up on UK beaches is down by 80% since the nation introduced mandatory charges for single-use plastic bags.

The Marine Conservation Society attributes the reduction in beach litter directly to the change, encouraging the UK government to take things even further, according to The Guardian.

Hmm. Is this good news? We’ll include it anyway. Maybe if you’re an ichthyologist, the only profession where it might be harder to pronounce than it is to graduate.

(We’re kidding, of course. This story is good news.)

Scientists have discovered a new species of piranha in the Amazon Basin, Scientist Flavio Gallo Cardozo and their team has published an article on phys.org about their journey to discover a new species of piranha.

It’s a fascinating read, even if the idea of meeting a piranha in real life is abjectly terrifying to you:

From CBC News, the story of a championship endurance horse being reunited with its family.

Flex (what a name that is) had gone missing in the area of Bragg Creek, after a bee sting spooked him and he ran away from his owner.

After days of searching, he was found chilling out in a local clearing. Oh to have the stress levels of a horse.
