World-first Diagnostic Tool for Scabies

This good news story comes from one of Profile Media’s clients, with biotech firm ZiP Diagnostics working with the Menzies School of Health Research to develop a world-first diagnostic device for scabies.

Scabies is a microscopic mite that burrows under the skin to lay eggs, and if left unchecked can cause life-threatening bacterial infections and the potentially fatal rheumatic heart disease.

The new device offers a faster diagnosis, and as researchers told the ABC, it’s hoped it can help prevent serious disease.

Stir Stick Able to Detect Potential Drink Spiking in Less Than a Minute

Researchers at the University of British Columbia have developed a tool to help people test their drinks for potential drink spiking.

The device looks like a stir stick, and when placed in a drink can detect common drink spiking drugs including GHB and ketamine within 30 seconds.

Researchers have told Global News they hope the stick will prevent assaults, with real-world testing the next step.

Blood Test May Detect Alzheimer’s 16 Years Before Symptoms Show

New research published in the journal Nature Medicine has found a blood test may be able to detect Alzheimer’s up to 16 years before symptoms begin.

The study looked at levels of a specific protein in the blood, Neurofilament light chain (Nfl), with a continuing rise in levels having the potential to serve as a biomarker of developing Alzheimer’s.

It’s hoped earlier detection may assist in testing treatment options. You can read more in this article from USA Today.
